"Hi. I'm Dave Trull with the Trull Gallery a custom furniture shop in St. Petersburg, Florida and I'm going to talk to you about wood working benches. What I have here in my shop is a pretty simple type of bench. And this is what you might be able to put in your own shop or garage. Kind of simple to make. Very durable and it gives you a lot of space to work with. In this case what I have is two layers of medium density fiber board. 3/4 inch pieces. So I've got a full inch and a half thickness so it's very sturdy. It's a very smooth top. Now I've had this bench for over 15 years now. You can see it's got some stains on it but it's still in relatively good condition. On the end of my bench I've added kind of a standard all around vice. I don't use this much for wood working but it does work as an occasional vice for that as well as metal working. And in this case I've got my bench mounted on a couple of cabinets so I've got some storage built in as well as some storage underneath for some of my larger tools. I personally am also working on more of a wood working bench. Which is more of a free standing piece of equipment. You'll generally see two vices on it. A shoulder vice and an end vice. And those will allow you to clamp very long pieces of wood or short pieces of wood as well. Again the piece I'm working on has storage built in. Some of them have an open base underneath. And either one works well. I just prefer the extra storage in mine. And what you'll see in a lot of high-end benches is either a solid maple top or a solid beech top. Something that's very durable, very stable and will take years of, I don't want to use the term abuse, but years of working on it and it's fairly easy to maintain a good stable top. That's some information on wood working benches. I'm Dave Trull with the Trull Gallery, the fine art of furniture making."
