"Hello, my name is David Kingery, and I'm a professional vocal coach here in Miami, Florida. Let's talk a little bit about effective exercise for vocal training. I treat singing as a sport. There are many muscles used in the process of singing, so you need to be in shape and work those muscles properly. Warming up and exercises are the best way to do that. The exercises that you do need to fit your type of voice. You don't want to try to do something too difficult and out of your range. So start with something easy and low and smooth. For example, humming is one of the best exercises you can do, and you can hum along to anything. Hum to some of your favorite songs on the radio in your car. In the shower in the morning, perhaps, is a great time to hum. Just smooth, soft hums. You can do little vocal patterns like that or exercises that are comfortable for you. Humming, again, is one of the best ways to start. Here are a few other exercises that you can do to warm up your voice. One sustained note on an AEIOU is a great way to warm up your voice and a perfect exercise. For example, AEIOU. You take a nice breath, and you hold the note throughout the exercise. And if you have a piano or not, you can just go up and down the scale. AEIOU. And so on. Another great way to exercise to warm up your cheeks and your lips and your tongue and your gums, and that's with consonants. Like B, B, B, B, B, B, B, B, B. Fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa. And so on and so forth. Another great exercise after you've done some of these preliminaries is singing on an octave. Those are some simple and effective exercises to get you warmed up."
