"Hello. My name is Dr. Robert Hernandez. I'm a psychologist in Miami, Florida, and I'm president and owner of Lafafalu Retreat House. If you are pregnant, or a mother that's nursing, there are some things you need to know about before you take sleeping pills. What I do with my patients, I refer them to their primary care physician, and/or their psychiatrist, but one of the things to be aware of is any type of prescription medications and over the counter drugs will affect a mother that's nursing or pregnant. There are some sleeping medications which are not at all suitable for pregnant mothers, and those include sleeping pills in the categories of those for depression--clients or patients that are diagnosed with clinical depression--for those that are seeking to sleep, and for those to promote a sleep. There are, within each category, medications for mothers who are pregnant or nursing, but there's always risks. That's why, with my patients, I refer them to the psychiatrist and their primary care physician and discuss the different procedures that they need to take and precautions while taking these medications."
