"Hello. My name is Dr. Robert Hernandez. I'm a psychologist in Miami, Florida, and I'm president and owner of Lafafalu Retreat House. Many different research studies have contribute to answer the question 'What causes sleep apnea?" One of the first things a patient with sleep apnea, when they come to me, I definitely refer them to their primary care physician. What we want to do is make sure that their pathways--the airways--are not being blocked, because the primary reason for obstructive apnea--sleep apnea--the obstructive airways are being blocked. This could be that the tongue relaxes to the point where it blocks the tissue. There's also the issue of being overweight, the person sleeping on their backs, so there's many different factors that contribute to sleep apnea, but one of the contributing factors is people that are overweight, or they do present with obesity. That also helps to create or to be a factor in sleep apnea. Very important, again, to see your general practitioner for further information on that."
