"Hi I'm Kevin Russell, I'm the volleyball coach here in South Beach, Florida. Let's talk a little bit about the rules of beach volleyball. If you've been an indoor player the rules of beach volleyball are going to be a little different for you. We'll start from the beginning. Service, you can serve from anywhere on the back line as you see back here. Most of the sand courts will have either nylon or rope lines so you can serve from anywhere behind that area. Anything if you step on the line or you go over the line during a serve it is considered a fault. You're allowed one toss and one serve. Outdoor volleyball, beach volleyball, is a rally scoring game up to 21 meaning any error or things like that is considered a side out. Side out is a point for the other team. So if you serve a ball, the person can receive the ball but they cannot receive the ball with their hands like they do in indoor volleyball, it is considered a double contact and it's awarded a side out for the other team. You do have three hits on both sides and the ball does have to go over after that point. If you do block a ball or touch a ball when somebody hits it from the other side it is considered a hit. Just like in indoor it is not considered a hit so you got to be careful to make sure you understand that, if you block a ball you have two additional hits to get the ball over. Everything has to be very, very clean outdoor. If you handset the ball, it's got to be no double contact and no lift. Again, you cannot go over the net for any reasons, net play is still as usual. And that's just a little bit about the rules of volleyball in beach."
