Video Transcript

"Hi! I'm Gary Wilson at America's Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College. Lions are unusual for being the only social cat, most cats are loners. The lions live in groups. The groups that they live in are called prides and if they belong to a pride then they will live on a territory but lions that aren't attached to a pride will wander, not attached to any particular pot, a spot of land. They as young male lions of course will leave the pride when they're about two years old and go off and live by themselves until they get big and strong enough to come back and try and take over a pride. Females live in their pride that they were born into all their life. They grow up and take their place in that pride and eventually raise their own cubs in that pride. So, the female lions in the pride are all related to each other. They're sisters, mothers, daughters, cousins like that but the males are not related to the females and this prevents imbreeding or mating with a close relative. So, the male lions instead of staying in the pride that they're born into, they leave and go off and find another pride when they're old enough to mate."
