"Hi this is Zephyr Clarke-Dolberg with Miami Dog Training in Miami, Florida. When it comes to dog crate training, it's very similar process as the puppy training, crate training. For one we're controlling our environment, that's again especially important with a dominant dog. But basically what you want to do is let them out first thing in the morning and give them a chance to relieve themselves after they've been in the crate all night they're going to have to go the bathroom upon waking up. Usually they can hold it that 8 hours overnight. So after letting them go to the bathroom and relieve themselves and pee in the morning, you want to bring them in, feed them in their crate, that's important because that really gives them a positive association with the crate as well as it just being a natural instinct for them to want to be in a closed in space because not only are dogs pack animals, they're den animals so it's an instinctual thing for them. And what you'll find is they might put up a fuss in the beginning but quickly settle in as long as we don't give in to the whining, screaming or barking that they're going to do in the crate in the beginning. And also you might want to try putting them in the crate at a time where you're not actually trying to get some sleep if this is in the beginning because they will have a tendency of barking, screaming and in which case you're going to destroy your sleep. So do it during the day during a weekend when you have time to really put aside for that specific routine. Feeding them in the crate and once they've eaten in the crate you maybe want to give them a half an hour, take them back outside, let them relieve themselves again and then if they've gone number one and number two outside you want to give them a little free time which they'll associate with having gone outside and then they're back in the crate after their free time."
