"Hi, I'm Jean Silva from New York city and I'm the commissioner of the New York Women's Sports League, let's go play some ball. The equipment you use in softball is very, very basic, a glove, a bat and a ball. But it's important you pick out the right glove, bat and ball. First let's start with the bat. You want to go to a local store, go to the bat rack and start pulling out bats and seeing how they feel. Different lengths, different weights, some are top heavy, some are lighter than others. When you swing it, you're going to get a sense of feeling. Remember, in your equipment, that's supposed to be an extension of your hand or an extension of your body, but it becomes part of you and you become part of it. So swing that bat, get a good sense and then go and buy it. The next thing you want, is a glove, gloves come in different lengths, different widths. The important thing is, you put your hand inside, make sure to take your finger and leave it outside and have a ball, throw it, feel it, see how it feels, make believe you're using it. It's going to be a little stiff because it's just right off the rack, but try a couple of them. One of them, you've got to fall in love with, that's the one you take to the cash register and you take it home with you. The third thing, balls, there's many different types of balls out there that we use. In New York city, here we use the Clincher by DeBeer, it's a flat seam ball, it's an excellent city ball, it can take the pounding of tough pavement and anything else out there. And yet there's also other balls that have seams in them and can be used just as well as a Clincher. Once again, your equipment must be part of you, it's an extension of your hand and it's an extension of you."
