"Aloha! My name is Keona with wehula.com in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In this clip, we're going to talk about how to make a lei. What is a lei? Leis are symbols of love and are given on special occasions, on birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and graduations. But anyone can wear a lei, anytime. The one rule about receiving a lei for the first time is always accept a lei, never refuse. The proper way to wear a lei is gently draped over the shoulders, hanging down both in front and in back. It is considered rude to remove the lei from your neck in the presence of the person who gave it to you. In Hawaii, May 1st is considered Lei Day in which everyone wears a lei from school children to businessmen. Today, I want to show you how to make a lei. Before you begin making your lei, decide on what type of material. Leis are made of flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, nuts feathers and even candy. Once you have decided on what type of lei you want to make, you will need the following materials, a long needle, thread or dental floss, scissors and a little time. First, thread your needle with about 30-40 inches of thread. Tie a large knot at one end of the thread. Thread as many flowers on that thread as you like, tie the knot together and give it to a special somebody. Once again, my name is Keona. Thank you for watching. Aloha!"
