"Hi, I'm Dr. Grace Wang. I'm a medical oncologist working at Advanced Medical Specialties in Miami, Florida. I'm here on the behalf of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I'd like to talk about how we can prevent breast cancer. Basically, we can avoid the different risk factors such as avoiding estrogen therapy, avoiding a fatty diets, avoiding alcohol. We can do a lot by exercising. They had a study -- a Norwegian study -- where they studied 25,000 women and they saw how much exercise they did, and if they did the equivalent of walking four hours a week, they cut the risk of breast cancer by 25 percent. And if they did heavy duty exercise four hours a week, they cut it by 50 percent. If a patient is very high-risk for breast cancer, either by a positive genetic test or positive family history or other predisposing factors, then we can consider tamoxifen or raloxifene, which are anti-estrogens, which help reduce the risk of breast cancer by 50 percent. Or if a patient is very, very high risk, we sometimes consider a profilatic mastectomy, which lowers the risk of breast cancer by about 92 to 95 percent."
