"Hi I am Dr. Grace Wang, I am a medical oncologist working Advanced Medical Specialties in Miami, Florida. I am here on the behalf of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Let's talk about some of the known causes of breast cancer. We know that genetics is involved, and there are certain gene tests such as the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene test that can be done. That show up to maybe up to a eighty-five percent chance of breast cancer if you are positive. Also we know that there are different hormonal factors, anything that increases your exposure to estrogen increases your risk. Like starting your periods early before the age of twelve, or ending them late after the age of fifty-five. Or not having a child until after the age of thirty, or never having children is a risk factor, because a pregnancy matures the breast cells. Or taking hormone replacement therapy after you go through menopause is a definite known risk factor for breast cancer. Now there are other risk factors such as diet, a fatty diet is linked to breast cancer. Japanese women have a very low risk for breast cancer, yet when they move to this country, and accept our diet they have a risk of breast cancer up to that of American women, which is one out of eight. Alcohol and lack of exercise are other know risk factors for breast cancer."
