"I'm Jeremiah Fox, I'm a carpenter and handyman out here in New York City. How to use a paddle bit. Now you'll be a familiar with a normal kind of drill bit which is about this big, good for small holes but every now and then you need to make a much bigger hole. For that, we want to use a paddle bit. This big wide thing for dowels, bolts, things of that nature. Now since we're, the best way to use a paddle bit is to put it inside a screw gun or a drill gun, it will kick up sawdust so it's important for safety reasons to have your eye protection on. It doesn't tend to make a lot of noise so you don't need to put in your earplugs for this, but if you want to, feel free. So the first thing you need to do is figure out where you want the hole. So you take your piece of wood, measure out your mark and give yourself a nice little crosshatch there. So once you have your crosshatch, you take the point of the paddle bit and put it right in the middle. Now make sure that you're going forward. So you have two choices, you can stop halfway if you're going to be putting in dowels for a stair banister or railings of some sort. Or you can continue and go all the way through. Now if you're going to continue and make a hole all the way through, make sure that you're not going to hurt anything beneath the piece of wood. Right now I'd be drilling into this table. So I want to move it over the side here and bring it through. Remember when this is spinning, it's very dangerous so don't get your fingers anywhere near it. So then you have a nice hole."
