I'm Steve Anthony. I'm a carpenter and a home repair remodeling specialist here in New York City. What is a cylindrical paraboloid roof? The term cylindrical paraboloid comes to us from geometry and it essentially means a dome shaped arc where each end of the arc meets an identical plane. That's what geometry will tell you about the cylindrical paraboloid. In architectural terms it is most commonly used to refer to sort of a curved domed type roof. Think of an army barracks probably is the best example I can give you as a paraboloid roof. It is a very simple design in the sense that there is nothing more to it than an arch essentially and it is very good at shedding rain and snow and such things as that. There are also variations on the paraboloid that employ a double planed curve. It is a little to explain. Think of sort of a saddle shape where it is curved this way and it is curved this way, that is another form of a paraboloid roof and it makes for some very striking architectural impact. You have seen it in several commercial buildings, certain arenas that have sort of the saddle shaped roof, that is the form of a paraboloid roof. In household architecture there are some architects that have used the paraboloid design to lend impact to their home design so it is a great effect and again it can be very effective at resisting weather. It is more costly to build, there is no standard trussing as you would see with a more traditional gabled roof but it is an option for some very high drama in terms of visual effect.
