"Hello, I am Dr. Vimai Patel. I am a radiologist at Gateway Radiology in Pinellas Park, Florida. Today, we are going to talk about what is pediatric radiology. Well, pediatric radiology is what what it says. It involves imaging of patients anywhere from the fetus, to a newborn, to an infant, to an adolescent, to a young adolescent. As with adult radiology, all imaging modalities that are employed are also used for pediatric radiology. The equipment isn't necessarily smaller, but the person is. X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, CAT scanned, nuclear medicine, and other radiology modalities are employed for imaging the pediatric patient. As an example, the fetus is typically imaged with ultrasound while it is still in the mother's womb. As a newborn, every modality is used to diagnose conditions that may be present at birth and infancy. Pediatric imaging is a sub-specialty in radiology that requires extra training by the radiologist to be familiar with the pathologies that are involved with the younger population. Modality technique is not necessarily different when imaging with adults, but we do have to worry about radiation doses for the younger population so it does require that we take special precautions in imaging of the pediatric patient, where if lead shielding needs to be utilized it will be utilized properly to limit the exposure to the child being imaged. I am Dr. Vimai Patel. I am a radiologist who works at Gateway Radiology in Pinellas Park, Florida, and I have just informed you about what pediatric radiology is all about."
