"Hello. I am Doctor Vimai Patel. I am a radiologist at Gateway Radiology working in Pinellas Park, Florida. Today we're going to talk a little about what is radiology used for. Well, radiology is a specialty of medicine that just about everyone utilizes during their lifetime, whether you are a newborn or from the elderly. Somebody always needs something performed by the radiology department, whether X-rays are taken for medical clearance before having surgery to X-rays being taken for broken bones. Radiology is used in every setting. In the outpatient setting, inpatient setting, and emergency room, radiology is a key modality for obtaining accurate diagnosis. In radiology, people can get X-rays, CAT scans, MRIs, ultrasound, bone scans which are done in nuclear medicine. But, as a medicine specialty, semi-invasive procedures are also performed, such as biopsies, drainage of fluid, either from a pus collection, fluid collecting in the lungs or in the body cavities. Radiology also involves semi-invasive procedures such as arteriograms, looking at the vessels in your brain and other parts of the body such as your lower legs or the abdomen. In radiology, procedures can also be performed using the modalities that are available to provide a relief of pain, such as low back pain, neck pain. Radiology can also be used, not only for diagnostic purposes, but also for therapeutic purposes. I am Doctor Vimai Patel.
