"Hello, I'm Dr. Vimai Patel. I work at Gateway Radiology in Pinellas Park, and today we're going to talk about what is emergency radiology. Emergency radiology is a specialty of radiology that deals with imaging of patients seen in the emergency room, in an acute setting with acute illness or acute trauma. It involves imaging of patients of all ages, ranging from a newborn to the elderly. In the emergency setting imaging modalities are the same as you would see in an outpatient or an inpatient setting; where x-rays, ultrasound, MRI, CAT scan, and other radiology imaging modalities can be used to diagnose acute illness in an acute trauma setting in an emergency patient. The role of the emergency radiologist is to provide stat reading and interpretation of the imaging modalities performed on the emergency patient. The importance of that is to have accurate stat diagnosis so the patient can be treated properly and emergently for the acute illness they present with in the emergency room. Also, in the emergency setting radiology is used not only for diagnosing the patient, but can also be used in utilization of performing minor procedures in the ER that require diagnostic guidance for the patients seen in the emergency room. The radiologist and the ER physician, in tandem, work together to come up with the accurate diagnosis, based on the physical exam performed by the emergency physician, and also the imaging performed on the patient by the radiology department; thus, allowing both physicians to work together and come up with the accurate diagnosis so the patient can be treated as early and emergently as possible. I'm Dr. Vimai Patel, from Gateway Radiology in Pinellas Park, and that was some information about emergency radiology that I provided."
