Smoke jumpers are specialized firefighters who fight forest and coastline types of fires in the wilderness setting. One of the requirements to become a smoke jumper is first and foremost, you must serve at least one fire season as a wilderness firefighter. Smoke jumpers are expected to know basic firefighting behavior and basic firefighting skills prior to becoming a smoke jumper. When they arrive at school, during their smoke jumper training, they will already have been trained in fire behavior and the basic firefighting skills. Becoming a smoke jumper is a very grueling training process. Many of the applicants do not make it because it is the cream of the crop or the top notch individuals that make it through the training and the physical endurance required to become a smoke jumper.
