And what I'm going to talk about is how to become a chief firefighting officer. There are sometimes several levels of chief officer position. Anything from battalion or district chief, which is usually the same type of rank to division chief and deputy chief all the way up into fire chief. Becoming a chief level officer requires years of training, experience and most of all academic study and aptitude. Many fire departments today require college courses and schooling as far as college degrees go. A two year degree would probably be the minimum in most fire service organizations to obtain the first line supervisor rank. After the first line supervisor rank the next level would be a chief level officer. At the chief level officer after the academics are completed, you will also have to face very competitive testing processes with other candidates and members trying to move up in rank. The chief level officer is an executive fire level officer position.
