"Hi, my name is Lawal McCray Senior. I'm the head football coach at Blanche Ely High School. We're located in Pompano Beach, Florida. Let's talk a little bit about the history of football. Many historians take it back and combine soccer and rugby as the major components of the beginnings of football. Our English version of football has so many similarities to the game of rugby, which started in the 1820's in England at a rugby boy's club. Also, what we call the cousin of football, soccer, was tied in to make what we call football, or American football. In the reference of the history of football, we're talking about how two different leagues, the NFL and the AFL, decide to merge and make this great league, which is the NFL now, exist. The game has come a long way since the beginnings. From a time when segregation when only whites only could play the game, to now, people of all different races, and creeds, and colors participate in this great game. This game has such an impact on our society that it goes from professional league to all the way down to little eight-year old kids having a desire to play this game. It also has an impact over the world. You have teams in Germany, Switzerland, and also even on the Orient playing this game. It has had a great effect, not only in the United States, but in the world."
