"Hi, I'm Dr. Darren Adamson from Argosy University in Salt Lake City. I'd like to talk to you today about toddler development, what to expect as your child grows, as your infant grows in to a toddler, and what happens during those toddler years. Typically, toddler is defined as the time when the child begins to walk, through about three years of age. So as you can tell, a lot happens during that time. The key, I think, as a parent with a toddler, is to watch for normal developmental changes, things like walking at around the age of twelve months, doesn't have to be twelve months, but it's around, on average, the age of twelve months. They begin to talk around the age of twelve months as well, making sounds that are recognizable as words. Toward the end of the toddler stage, those sounds that are recognizable as words become sentences. First two word sentences, then three word sentences, and pretty soon, your toddler is talking as if they were a miniature adult. I think some of the other changes that you need to pay attention to are growth. Growth in their physical body, their height, their weight, just making sure that they seem to be moving along in that regard. I think another critical area is in their cognitive developments. So, they should be able to recognize colors, they should be able to recognize sounds, ask for things that they want by the name of that thing, such as a drink, drink of milk, a cookie, or what ever they might be wanting, a toy. So you want to watch for that cognitive development, or that ability to, for them to think. They key to toddler development and making sure that the development is occurring normally is make sure that you take the toddler in for regular well check ups with their, their pediatrician, or the physician for your family. That doctor can help you to make sure that your toddler is developing normally, and with in the typical ranges for the development of a toddler."
