Body painting has always been a tribal kind of design. It's been accepted in many places throughout the world; not only as an art form but originally, more so, as a way of letting people know your position in the tribe. The henna is not a permanent tattooing but it is significant in many cultures, as far as letting people know what the tribal significance is of the picture or the design. It is, from New Zealand into the Samoan Islands and all of those areas, it's been very much accepted and used. And then, in the United States it became very much popularized in the 1960's, when our social mores became more acceptable as far as more showing of the skin, more nudity. The painting of the skin became a very acceptable art form. And this is different than tattooing because tattooing is a permanent decision, and not just something that is temporary for a certain purpose.
