The Middle Ages were significant because they were part of the Catholic religion, part of the monarchy system of kings, and all of that came to an end for several reasons. For one thing, the black plague came along, and people were afraid that it was going to be the end of the world, and they were very worried, and the amount of people that died during the black plague was just phenomenal. In addition to that, the printing press was developed and people could keep in communication with other people more frequently and quicker, and as that continued, the development of the cannon, which was so powerful that it could knock down walls of castles and fortresses, and so the king was no longer the protector that he could be at one time. And then, as it came along, Catholicism became questioned more and more, and Protestantism came along. So all of those things ate away at the medieval kind of habit.
