Video Transcript

"Who invented the mailbox? It's kind of interesting since the slogan of the post office was neither rain, nor sleep, nor snow during dark of night should keep us from our appointed rounds. And these people walked from door to door putting mail at people's doorstep in their mailbox. Before that time, however, when did the mailbox come around? In the 1600's, in France, they had places that you could put mail. But it wasn't until the mid 1800's in the United States that we had a doorstep mailbox. Before that time you had to go to the post office in town, and pick up your mail. But the mail now was delivered quite conveniently to each office, each home by a mailbox system. And that required a lot of manpower in order to get that taken care of. And that is where our mailbox system came from."
