"Hi, my name is Dr. Ana Lamas, and I'm in the practice of allergy and clinical immunology with two offices here in Miami, Florida. Influenza is prevented by various means. First of all, let's discuss a little bit about what influenza is. It's a virus, and the interesting thing of influenza is that it's a very smart virus and it changes itself all the time. So every year -- and that's why you hear about the flu vaccine changing -- every year, the scientists try to figure out what types of markers the influenza vaccine is going to have in the influenza that will appear in the world during that quote, unquote, flu season. So we try to prevent influenza infection, of course, by getting the flu shot. And the flu shot is a wonderful medication that is given yearly in the fall with the markers of the influenza virus that will be present in that flu season to induce protecting, life-saving antibodies."
