Landscape architects plan and design traditional places such as parks, residential developments, campuses, gardens, cemeteries, commercial centers, resorts, transportation facilities, corporate and institutional centers and waterfront developments. on 6/26/2009 "Landscape architecture" is a field and profession about much more than what has been presented here. Perhaps this article would be better titled residential landscape design.

From the American Association of Landscape Architects' website, here's a more comprehensive explanation of landscape architecture and landscape architects for those who are interested:

"Landscape architecture is the profession that encompasses the analysis, planning, design, management and stewardship of the natural and built environment. "Hi, I'm Tim Gipson. I'm going to talk to you about landscape architecture. Now, landscape architecture isn't just about making your backyard or the areas around your house look nice. It's about doing the right things and creating a good environment, and also choosing the right mix of plants, not only for aesthetics, but also for what does well in your region of the country or wherever you are. So landscape architecture can include creating elements like this pond in a backyard, planting trees, planting bushes, gardens, and creating areas that add a nice, aesthetic look and a value to your home. There are several ways that we can approach landscape architecture. It can be done from a do-it-yourself perspective by getting books. There are computer programs that are available either online or at your local home center or hardware store or landscape retailer. And it's very easy to come up with something that looks good. A lot of these programs and books will provide you the information for plants and trees that work well in your region where you are, and then also give you ideas on how to set up certain areas. And of course, there are architects that specialize in landscape architecture that can provide plans that are custom-designed for your home and for your likes. So whether you do it yourself or consult a landscape architect, it is something that can add a lot of value and a lot of nice elements to the outside of your home. So I'm Tim Gipson, talking about landscape architecture."
