"A big concern in health care these days is the human papillomavirus or HPV virus. It has been linked with cervical cancer in women, and is also the cause of genital warts. There is no cure and once exposed and infected, you have this problem for life. The women who get pap smears, we now test them for HPV virus on the cervix. And if this is present, they have a higher chance of developing cervical cancer in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. Yearly pap smear tests can help detect early changes in the cells caused by the HPV virus, and therefore, help catch this at a early stage to get a better treatment. Human papillomavirus infection is caused by sexual contact with a person infected with that virus, and there is now a vaccine called Gardasil that women can take at age eight to 26, which helps protect them against several strains of the HPV virus that have been found most commonly involved with development of cervical cancer at a later age."
