"Stomach viruses, or gastroenteritis, can actually be caused by bacteria or virus. The rotavirus is most commonly in small children, and you see a lot of this in children going to daycare centers, childcare centers, and is actually passed on by fecal contamination -- just surfaces, toys. Patients or caretaker's not washing their hands properly after cleaning and changing babies. Bacterial gastroenteritis just comes from exposure to a virus or bacteria that gets into the gastrointestinal tract. If you have a stomach virus, the most common symptom you will notice initially is vomiting. You can have a low-grade fever to a high-grade fever. You also can have flu-like symptoms, achy body and joints. You can develop diarrhea, and the biggest concern with this because of the vomiting and the diarrhea is dehydration, particularly in small children. And any evidence of dehydration in a small child, that child should be taken to the hospital immediately. Adults just need to eat...just need to keep themselves well-hydrated by eating soups and drinking lots of liquids."
