"Hi! My name's Kayti Brosnan. I'm a registered nurse here in Austin, Texas. And today, I'm going to tell you about blood glucose monitors. These are devices that diabetics, or people that are checking their blood sugar are able to use at home. We use them in the clinical setting but I'm going to talk about the kind of when you're using the blood glucose monitors in the home setting to monitor your diabetes and your blood sugar levels. This is the device that uses basic component that measures the blood sugar and is able to give you a reading of that at any time. Most frequently, you're checking in the morning and before meals. So, it's called a fasting blood sugar when you check in the morning and then when you're checking before meals, this is what you use for a maintenance dose. So, you want to see what your blood sugar level is at and then determined by what your doctor has prescribed , you're going to use insulin to help bring the blood sugar down. So, really the main point of having a blood glus, blood glucose monitor, is to monitor the blood glucose and this is a diagnostic device or instrument that you can use at home to help you manage a diabetic's plan or the disease process."
