"Hi my name is Kayti Brosnan, I'm a registered nurse in Austin, Texas and today I'm going to talk about financial help with diabetes medication. It can cost up to 14,000 dollars a year for the treatment and the medicine that's needed to help manage diabetes. So the first thing that hopefully you have is insurance. If you don't have insurance, there are some state and government regulated programs. You got Medicare as well as Medicaid and you have to apply for these and you also have to be accepted so those are things to look into. There's also some drug companies that will actually give medication at a discounted price. You can do this through the Internet but you have to have your doctor give you a prescription and it has to go through a medical route to actually get that financial assistance. And the one that I think is probably the most beneficial and it's also going to incorporate some education and continued maintenance is when you're using your clinics in your local area. For instance, here in Austin, Seton has several different community clinics, one in particular Seton McCarthy is has a lot of things for diabetes. So they've got diabetes education classes that you can go to on Fridays, they've also got discounted test strips and lancets and supplies that you can get because those cost just as much as a prescription so you can get those right from there. And there's also other programs associated with these clinics, for instance one of the major grocery stores in Austin is AGB and they have prescriptions for 5 dollars for diabetics which is a really great discount. So that's probably a really good resource and something to look for in your own hometown, what clinics are offering those with education, the supplies and the medicine to help you treat your diabetes the best that you possibly can."
