"Depending on what type of burn that the patient has experienced depends on the treatment that's necessary. If it's a chemical burn, then you need to identify the chemical. So if it's a phosphorus burn, then you need to make sure that you keep water away from the wound as well and brush any powdery substances off of the burn surface or the burned skin area. As far as...as far as treatment is concerned, you can mix equal parts of baking soda and water into a mixture and apply to the surface that's burned -- the burned area of the skin. And then it can be washed off, and that helps to remove some of the sting from the burn itself. But that can only be used with first and some minor second-degree burns. After you've used the mixture on the burn itself, it's a good idea to wrap with dry sterile dressings and to do your best to prevent infection."
