"Hello, I'm Dr. Carrie Burhenn. I'm a veterinarian at the Feline Medical Clinic in Vancouver, Washington and I'm here today to tell you about symptoms of mange in cats. Mange is actually quite a rare disease in cats and it's actually much more confused with allergic dermatitis. Allergic dermatitis is a very common illness in cats and is diagnosed because the cat is itchy and pulling at it's hair so the cat is taken to the veterinarian. One of the checks that the veterinarian will run on a cat is a test for mange which is caused by one of two species of mites. One of the mites is actually a very common resident of cats skin is actually normal. But if it becomes overpopulated, it can cause problems. The other species of mite is not a normal mite in cats and it should be eliminated with medication. But again, there are many other causes for a cat being itchy and pulling at it's hair, so your veterinarian will check for other causes as well as mange and make sure that you are treating the right condition in that cat."
