"Ah the beautiful Samana. It is a destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Green mountains and breathtaking beaches, lively little towns and turquoise waters await visitors. It is known for being the most prominent geographic feature of the Dominican North Coast. The great Christopher Columbus arrived to its beaches in 1493 but it was not to be a warm welcome and he and his crew were attacked upon arrival by the Sequoia Indians. Needless to say they turned around and left to search for more welcoming islands. He did, however, name the bay Gulf of Deutsches which means the Gulf of Arrows and I think we can see why. Samana and the surrounding area in the Dominique Republic is very popular with whale watchers, scuba divers, rock climbers and horseback riders. Your will notice the locals make up a rainbow of complexions. This is due to the mixed backgrounds of the region. The freed American slave settlers and the European immigrants combined with the people already living in the Dominique Republic to create a very cultured and social makeup. The Dominique Republic has a population of almost nine million people."
