We use different types of software programs in our publishing business, depending on the type of book. If the book is heavy text, such as a novel, we use Microsoft Word, or some other word processing type of program. We also request that authors send us their manuscripts without the, any sort of formatting so that we can do the layout of the book in the proper way to submit to the printer. If a book has lots of graphics, we might use a layout for our rim, such as Clark Express, to use photographs and clip art, and insert them in the proper places. This allows for more flexibility in the placement of the photos, and the graphics, and the ability to rotate them. We also use Photo Shop to adjust the photos and graphics, and make them clear as possible. It is possible to take a damaged photo and mend it, using Photo Shop. This is particularly helpful when working on a genealogy book, or many older photos that might be included. When finished with the layout process, Adobe Acrobat is needed to turn your files into usable format for the printer. Each printer has it's own setting requirements for Acrobat. Many printers will deal only with publishing companies. But there are a lot of self publishing and subsidy companies from which to choose. Just make sure that you check them out thoroughly before you make your decision.
