"Ok so when you are training a dog to catch they may not know that when you throw something you want them to catch it in their mouth. A lot of times with a ball like this I might throw it, and as you can see she's going to pick it up, so she doesn't necessarily know that I want her to catch it. So the first thing would be to get the dog to sit, sit. And just to bring it to their mouth. And get it. As you can see she starts opening her mouth and get it. And she knows that this is something, get it, and she tries to get it. Drop it. Next step would be, I can back up and make sure I have the dog's attention, sit, stay. She's got her eye on the ball and I'm just going to lightly toss it to her. And she brings it back. Drop it. Good dog. And make sure to praise the dog so that they know that was the right thing. Lets try it again. I'll get her to sit. Sit. Sit, stay. I'll back up, she clearly sees the ball, a little bit longer distance this time and I'll toss it. And drop it. Good dog."
