"Today's topic is applying for a government grant for a small business. First thing that you'll want to do is compile the information that you're going to need to apply for the grant. And typically you'll want to keep two running notebooks. You'll want to keep all your tax returns because your banks and your grants, people are always going to want some form of financial consideration to look at. Just keep your tax returns all together in a permanent file for you to copy from. Also keep your other financial documents, your proformas, your actual financials, your tax certificates, appraisals, environmentals, everything to do with your business. Also keep another running permanent file of that so that you have that available. And the familiar sites that you'll want to go to or the agencies that you'll want to use, there's the US Department of Commerce, US Department of Agriculture. Usually in our state we have an office locally as well as at the State Capital. Your local Chamber of Commerce may have some available. We have a Main Street Organization available. There are some websites, grantopportunities.com, and actually you can Google a search on grant opportunities and there are some good sites out there who tell you who not to go to as well. So just be wary. Don't give out personal information and be ready for when they call you back and ask for more information."
