on 8/23/2009 if you have a sand substrate you do need a scoop for cleaning in between deep cleans (monthly). sponges in the water bowl help raise the humidity, so in my opinion you should have them... i agree with the heating pad tip to not have it directly on the bottom of the tank because they can be harmful to the crab if it does bury down too far.

"Buying hermit crab supplies is fairly easy and fairly self-explanatory. However, there is lots of stuff you're going to see marketed to you in...in your local pet store or wherever you're purchasing your supplies from that, frankly, is unnecessary. Things like little beach scoops, really aren't needed. Anyone who tells you, like, like these water pillows and stuff for hermit crabs, unneeded as well. And you certainly don't need a sponge in the water bowl either like some people might tell you. Things that you should look at when you're purchasing hermit crab supplies, cholla wood is always a great climbing structure for hermit crabs, and strongly recommended. Little misting bottles are great, though you can buy just as easily a big garden mister from a local grocery store. Often, places will have little heating pads that you can put on your...your enclosure to help raise the heat. My suggestion when using these heating pads is never actually put them underneath the enclosure. Put them on the back of the enclosure. That way when the hermit crab burrows to get away from the heat, he's not actually getting closer to it. You'll see lots of other cool things, like there's...there's backgrounds made out of cork bark, or shredded coconut husks that you can hang on the back of your enclosure to help 'em climb on. And there's various treats you can buy as well. All of these things are nice and cool. They're relatively unnecessary in the long run. Really, what you need is, you need your bedding, you need your food, you need your water, and need your water dishes and your food dish. But don't let that stop you from giving him things to climb on, and making it something that's esthetically pleasing for you as well as environmentally pleasing for him. You really gotta find that...that in-between ground where you can both be happy, because that's...that's what we want. We want you to be happy, and want the hermit crab to be happy."
