"The next thing we're going to talk about is hermit crab diet. Hermit crabs are an omnivorous animal which means that they pretty much eat anything they can find. They're scavengers. They like a little bit of everything, plant matter, animal matter, it's all good for them. Now when it comes to feeding your pet hermit crab, I do recommend feeding a commercial diet as a staple. These are nutritionally complete diets designed for hermit crabs. They come in various forms anything from the hermit crab Yummy which are like a gel to the like powder and granule diets and the more like canned dog food kind of kitten kind of diets. Anyone of those is fine. It's o.k. to alternate between them. You can you know, use one until it's gone and then buy different ones. That's cool. Options are always great when it comes to nutrition. You can also supplement these with things basically from your table. Although I don't recommend doing it a lot. But things like fresh fruit and veggies can be added in, strips of cooked meat be it fish or beef or things like that can also be offered. Keep it on the minimum. Use it as a treat. But it can done and it can make keeping your hermit crab a little bit more fun for you."

on 8/23/2009 in my opinion, you should always offer something other than commercial food... commercial food is often filled with preservatives and things that are unhealthy for your crab.. i do use commercial food myself, but every day i offer a different fruit of vegetable, and sometimes i offer steamed shrimp (with the exoskeleton) and shrimp is very good for hermit crabs, especially if they are showing signs that they are going to molt.
