"You've decided you would like to try your hand at putting together a collection of poems and short stories that share a common theme that you think would make an excellent book or collection to be circulated at Christmas or during the holidays. But you don't know anything about copyright law and you've heard something about a collective work. Hello, I'm Robert Todd and I'm here to answer the question what is a collective work under copyright law. Well perhaps the best place to start is to go to the government's website at www.copyright.gov and check out the definition of what is considered a collective work, what is the procedure for copyrighting collective works and if you feel comfortable in viewing and navigating this website and feel comfortable that you can apply and go through the processes necessary to copyright this, then proceed. But our general recommendation and caution is this is a very comprehensive and complex area of the law and you need specialized legal consultation and representation. So we would recommend if you're going to do this that you hire a lawyer who specializes in copyright law to assist you. I'm Robert Todd, and thank you for watching."
