"Dressing smartly is a bit more than just looking good so the point is that you feel comfortable. But first of all, if you want to dress smartly in Italy, you should find nice, good looking, and comfortable shoes. For example sandals or leather shoes, because this is the most preferable amongst Italians, so they almost always wear leather shoes in neutral colors. And basically they almost always choose the neutral colors and the neutral fabrics as well. For example cotton, silk, or linen. What about the neutral colors? For example black or white or navy or beige. But these are the most preferable colors if you really want to dress smartly in Italy. If you want to walk around and you want to visit some of the attractions as well you should bring a parasol with you or a wide rimmed hat. And please don't forget about the suntan lotions neither. Respect the dress codes for churches, it means that you should leave in your hotel the skin bearing items because otherwise you won't be let in the church. The Italians are really conservative, deeply religious people, so please respect their rules."
