"Hi, my name is Mike Mitchell., and today, I'm going to explain how to communicate better on the phone. For many of us, talking on the phone is something natural, and something that we do everyday, but very often, after we speak to somebody on the phone, we're not sure that they actually understood exactly what we wanted, so how do we communicate better on the phone? The first thing to do, is to remember that when you are making the initial call, the person at the other end usually doesn't know who is calling, so when you initially speak to the person, after your salutation, like hello, you should identify the caller, so hello, this is Mike Mitchell. Number two, you should identify the recipient of the call, by asking simple questions, like is Mr. Smith there, or may I speak to Mr. Smith, please? Number three, you can oftentimes also identify the subject of the call. Is Mr. Smith there? I would like to speak to him about the order that I made yesterday. This will then help the person at the other end, identify number one, whom you want, and number two, can assist in the transfer of the call, by identifying what the topic is, so that when Mr. Smith does pick up the phone, he knows immediately what the topic is going to be about."
