"We're going to talk today about how to make a violin. Three things I know talking to great violin makers, you need to make a good form, you need to sharpen your tools a lot and you need to know how to get sound out of the wood and you make several before you get that part. I do have a violin here that the top was off of and I, so I thought I'd get look at the inside; you basically have a top and a back, maple and spruce, the ribs and the neck and scroll and everything else is maple and the top is spruce along with the bass bar, this spruce. There's a lot of carving done with planes and with chisels to get to the top plate and the back plate to the thickness the maker desires. Great makers, it's a lot of expression, it's a personal statement to what they're doing and ultimately, the ones you do the best, their fiddle sound the best."
