"Hi, this is Laura Turner, and today, I'm going to talk with you about how to write self-appraisals. Writing self-appraisals can be kind of a daunting experience, especially if you're writing them for your job, and of course, nobody wants to tell anyone that they are not doing a good job at their job. But, try to be honest in your self-appraisal to your manager and your management that's having you write it. First of all, follow the format that the company wants you to follow, so know exactly what's required of this self-appraisal. Hopefully, they'll give you some guidelines about it, and you don't have to sort of make it up on your own because that won't help anybody. They want very specific things from you and they want to know exactly what you've been doing over the course of the last year, or the six months after you've been writing this appraisal. Next, answer the questions honestly, but really try to play up the things that you did very well, and things that you know you did very well. For as far as assessing your weaknesses and things that you did not do very well, suggest ways to improve upon them in your appraisal. So for example, don't just say I need to communicate better; say, will implement a new strategy or a new plan for talking to people, you know face to face more often, and therefore, learning how to communicate better so that you actually give a solution to your employer, rather than just stating a problem. And that makes you look like a more effective and productive worker. So, good luck writing your self-appraisal."
