Summary: A caulk gun should be used before painting a door in order to get rid of imperfections and fill in holes. Use caulk to get rid of imperfections in a door with tips from a professional painter in this free video on home improvement.
"In this next clip I want to talk a little bit about puttying or caulking and also scraping and getting rid of some imperfections in your door. Now I tend to use caulk. A lot of people use putty, any hardware store will sell you caulk with a caulk gun as well as just a little cup of putty but I prefer caulk. I can put it in the hole or the surface and I can smooth it out and it works a lot better for me. So you have your caulk gun and also your 5 in 1. Remember this can get in those tight crevices and everything and it can also scrape. So I want you to take a look right here for me and there was obviously some writing of when they built this door but there is also two small holes here and they're almost like staple holes. You'll find this on a lot of doors and sometimes because it is on the edge, some painters or anybody who is painting the door might have missed it. So what I like to do is I like to take a little bit of caulk and press it right in that hole and press some more caulk right in that hole and what I do is remove the excess and while I am removing it I make sure that that hole is completely filled and once it is filled I can rub it off and I can feel that I've got a nice smooth surface there and now just up above that is one of the hinges for your door. Now you do not want to caulk around your hinge. Most of those are pretty tight and everything but you will notice that there is some frayed edges right there and so you take your 5 in 1 and you've got a sharp edge there and you can actually get those off of there. They'll create two things, one in your paint brush while you are painting it will actually get into your paint brush and actually when you are leaving your nice coat on the door it will actually leave one of those paint dries and then you are scraping and painting again and you are going to end up painting the whole door. You've got your little pointy edge so you can get in there and get those edges out while scraping the hinge and also clean these up once you have get painted or even before you paint or whatever. But get rid of those marks, fill in your holes and you're ready to go."
