How to Paint a Door: Preparing the Door

"In this next clip we are actually going to prepare the door for painting and there is a couple steps to preparing that door for painting. The most important one whether it is a painted door or a brand new door is you want to give it a light sanding because what sanding does it actually roughs up the surface a little bit and it also takes off the bumps and grains and makes the door somewhat smooth but roughs it up enough so that the paint or the primer or the sealer will actually apply to the actual door or the surface that you are painting. One way to make sure that you get a smooth sanding surface is you don't want to sand really hard, you just want to sand in a pattern and when I say a pattern, I usually like to sand, we're going to open the door a little bit here but I usually like to sand a third at a time. So I have got one, two, three. I'm going to go with the grain of the door and I'm simply just going to rough up that door a little bit. Now once you get the front sanded you want to make sure that your edges are sanded as well so go ahead and just run up the edges, run right back down and you want to do that to both side. When you are finished it is a good idea to take a dry rag and just dry it off. It is almost kind of like vacuuming you want to get rid of the dust and that is the sanding part of your job."
