"Hi I'm Dr. Savage and I'm here to tell you how to relieve heart burn. First of all avoid things that cause heartburn. Alcohol, tobacco, certain foods of course, that is the first step. Secondary you maintain a healthy weight. Other things you can try are to elevate the head of the bed. Now when you are experiencing heart burn there are certain remedies that you can try. Well it helps to sit up straight. Try drinking a glass of water. If that doesn't work try something with a little mint leaf. Sometimes there are certain remedies that have been said to help is to drink a tablespoon of vinegar or a teaspoon of vinegar rather and that actually is acidic and that actually has been shown to close up the sphincter that separates the esophagus from the stomach. If that doesn't work then conventional means is medicine of course. You know antacids such as calcium or Pepto Bismol. Those are very effective. If not or if those don't help and you're experiencing symptoms of heartburn more than a couple of times per week this is when you would want to talk to your primary care provider and discuss other options.
