How to Clean a Trombone

"Hi. My name is Chris with Summerhays Music, here in Salt Lake City, Utah. And today, we're going to talk about how to clean a trombone. There are two different ways to have your trombone cleaned. You can do it at home by yourself or you can take it in to a local music shop that has a repair shop, and they can chemically clean the trombone for you. If you're going to do it at home, I'm going to talk a little bit right now about how to clean it on your own. When cleaning your instrument at home, you will need a trombone cleaning kit that will come with a mouthpiece brush, and it also comes with a brush for cleaning all the different parts of the tubes. When cleaning this in your bathtub, you want to make sure to use mild soapy water and lukewarm water. You do not want it to be boiling water, or you could damage your trombone by ruining the lacquer that is on the outside of the trombone. You will clean inside each and every hole that comes out. You also clean the inner slides and the outer slides on both sides. After you're done running your brushes through all the different parts, you want to rinse it thoroughly and let it air dry. Once your trombone is cleaned and air-dried, you can go ahead and put it back together. Put new slide grease on your inner slides and new slide grease on your main tuning slide. Your trombone is all clean and ready to play.
