How to Grow Thyme

"Hi, this is Yolanda from vanveenbulbs.com. And in this segment, we're going to talk about how to grow thyme. And now, we're talking thyme as in the herb. It's spelled T-H-Y-M-E, and it's a beautiful herb that grows great in the garden and it's great to use in the kitchen as well. I love thyme because it grows like a ground cover. It's great on the edges of flowerbeds or around some bricks or somewhere where you can make it a little bit of a carpet. It looks just like a carpet. I love it. It's so beautiful. And you can use it in the garden and you can use it in the kitchen. So it's great with chicken dishes and with tomatoes and eggs. There's so many different uses for thyme. This particular thyme is called a lime thyme, and apparently, it's not used...it's used as an ornamental herb. It's not used for cooking so much. But this variegated lemon thyme is great for cooking, and it loves full, hot sun with good drainage. So all thymes have to be in a sunny, good spot with good drainage. And you can start them by seed or you can get a root and start them in a container already growing by the roots, and they multiply very quickly as well, so you kind of got to watch them so they don't push out other plants. But they're great on the borders, on the edges, of the beds because they don't get really tall and they're really easy to grow as long as they have good drainage and you keep them watered in the heat of the summer. And in the wintertime, a lot of times, they'll still stay green almost all winter. But if it freezes really hard in your climate and they die back, then you just trim them back and they'll come back every year even larger and more beautiful than the year before. So thyme is a beautiful herb for your garden."
