"So you've just found your next great opportunity and you are ready to leave your job. My name is Wade Childress from the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. And I'm here to tell you how to properly write a formal letter of resignation. First thing be respectful, you never know when you are going to need to work with these people again and if this is just moving on to something else, there's no problems here. There's no need to burn any bridges, you want to be nice, you want to be formal, you want to be appropriate. Second, keep it short, you really don't need to go into all the reasons why you are leaving, it's just sufficient to say, hey I've found something else and it's time for me to move on. Next one, give appropriate notice. That might be two weeks in a lot of cases, for some professional jobs that's a month. If you've got a contract make sure you read through the contracts, some contracts lock you in to six month notice. Beware of that. As I said before don't burn bridges, you may need to work with these people again, I find what comes around goes around and twenty years later you are probably going to see these people again. The other thing is thanks for the opportunity. If it's been a good time, if you had a good time working there, keep a good relationship with your boss, say thank you, appreciate the opportunity but it's time for me to move on. Sample of a quick letter is, Dear Boss, I've found a wonderful opportunity I think it's time for me to move on, thank you very much for everything that you've done for me, and let me know if I can help you with anything as I'm wrapping things up. Again my name is Wade Childress I'm with the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast and I've told you how to properly a write a letter of resignation."
