"How far can a snake strike? Well it depends on the snake really. They can strike anywhere from half to two thirds their body length depending on the situation. The most offensive strikes are going to be bluffs so they are really not going to be full out strikes. He's not trying to get you he is just trying to scare you away. So those are generally going to be a third to a half of the snake's body length whereas if he was actually going for prey and trying to catch something to eat he is more likely to do the full range of the strike though the farther the strike distance the less accurate he is going to be so he wants to get as close a possible. Now for the real long distance strikers you really want to see them in action you have got to look at a tree boa because the tree boas or tree pythons like to, they can anchor, they have a prehensile tale so they'll anchor that tail around a branch and they can strike almost the entire length of their body if they want to which is very very impressive so snakes have a considerable range and in fact some of them can even hop a little bit with their strike and actually throw themself at you so you know whenever you are in the position especially if you are in the wild and there is a snake and he has coiled to strike and a snake will generally get what is called the S curve in his body before he strikes, he coils himself up like a spring then you know be aware that the snake can be anywhere form four to six feet and can get you from a pretty good distance away so always keep your distance especially in the wild with an unidentified snake."
