"This is Dr. David Cathcart from Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph Missouri. And we're going to talk about how to identify skin melanomas. Skin melanomas are one of the one of the classes of skin cancers that is particularly aggressive. Melanomas have to be considered a deadly and very, very dangerous. They typically will form on the backs of legs particularly in women and they tend to spread to other parts of the body. When they do spread to other parts of the body they take up space so they rob the surrounding cells of nutrition. They tend to further spread or metastasize to other parts of the body. But they can occur anywhere. I've seen them on scalps. Melanomas typically start off as just a dark maybe black spot. Again edges may be somewhat irregular and it rapidly grows or rapidly changes in size. Those things need a very quick intervention by your doctor. They need to be biopsied by someone whose trained and skilled and knows what to look for. This is Dr. David Cathcart talking to you today about skin melanoma."
